About Red Cardinal Clematis

Rouge Cardinal is a vigorous, deciduous clematis with single, velvety crimson-red flowers accented by pale filaments and darker anthers. The RHS describes flowers from early or midsummer into early autumn; a US nursery lists bloom from late spring to early fall. Its climbing stems can reach about 2.5 to 4 metres when given support. (RHS; Wilson Bros Gardens) ## Growing conditions Grow the vine in full sun or partial shade in moist, well-drained soil. Keep the root zone cool and shaded, and train the leaf-stalks onto a trellis, fence, arch, or other support. It is also listed for large patio containers. (RHS; Wilson Bros Gardens) ## Pruning The RHS places Rouge Cardinal in pruning group 3. Cut back the previous season's growth in late winter or early spring to encourage new flowering stems. (RHS) ## Wildlife Wilson Bros Gardens lists butterflies, hummingbirds, and other pollinators among visitors to this flowering vine.
