About Special Occasion Clematis

Clematis ‘Special Occasion’ (Pyne) is a deciduous climbing clematis that suits a large container or a supported garden planting. Its pale pinkish-lavender to mauve-blue flowers have a darker central bar and appear in late spring and summer, often with a later flush. ## Flowers and size The [RHS plant profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/109855/clematis-special-occasion-el/details) describes large flowers and flowering from late spring into early summer, then again from late summer into early autumn. A [Brushwood Nursery listing](https://www.brushwoodnursery.com/products/clematis-special-occasion) gives a 5–7 foot height and zones 4–11; an archived [Joy Creek Nursery catalog](https://studyres.com/doc/7784355/august---joy-creek-nursery) identifies Ken Pyne as the raiser and lists 5–6 feet, zones 4–9, and container use. The current height label fits those cultivar listings; no supported width range was found. ## Siting Grow in sun or partial shade with a sturdy support and moist, well-drained soil. Keep the root area cool and shaded while allowing the vine to receive light. ## Maintenance This is a pruning-group-2 clematis. Make a light cleanup after the first flush and remove weak or damaged stems; avoid cutting the whole vine hard before spring flowering.
