Clematis ‘Ville de Lyon’ is a deciduous, climbing cultivar with large carmine-red flowers and contrasting yellow anthers. It flowers on current-season growth in summer and autumn; exact-cultivar sources place its mature height between about 2.5 and 6 m, with a narrower spread around 0.5–1 m. See the [RHS plant profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/94458/clematis-ville-de-lyon-ll/details) and [RHS Plants](https://www.rhsplants.co.uk/plants/_/clematis-ville-de-lyon/classid.923/) for cultivar details.
## Flowers and placement
Give the vine a strong support in full sun or partial shade. It prefers moist, fertile, well-drained soil with cool roots. The lower foliage can scorch by late summer, so it may be useful to grow the stems through a shrub or other planting that shades the base.
## Seasonal display
The RHS describes continuous flowering from July to October, with large flowers and golden centres. The Plant Finder height estimate is shorter than some nursery listings; the live 3 m point remains within the RHS profile's 2.5–4 m range and the Missouri Botanical Garden's 10–12 ft range.
## Maintenance
This is a Group 3 clematis. In early spring, cut the previous year's stems back to a pair of strong buds about 15–20 cm above the ground, then apply balanced slow-release fertilizer. Mulch around the base while keeping the crown clear.
