‘Hummingbird’ is a compact, deciduous summersweet with fragrant white flower spikes in summer and dark green leaves that turn yellow in fall. The [Morton Arboretum](https://mortonarb.org/plant-and-protect/trees-and-plants/summersweet-clethra/) describes a rounded plant 2–3 feet high and wide; the [Chicago Botanic Garden](https://www.chicagobotanic.org/plant-information/plant-finder/clethra-alnifolia-hummingbird-hummingbird-summersweet) lists 4 feet high by 5 feet wide, while Woodlanders reports 30–40 inches high and 6–8 feet of spread. Existing 1 m dimensions remain plausible within these documented mature ranges.
## Flowers and Placement
White flowers appear in mid to late summer and attract butterflies and hummingbirds. Grow in full sun to part shade in consistently moist, acidic soil; the shrub also tolerates wet ground and shade. Use it in a border, rain garden, or moist understory, allowing room for suckering growth. Published hardiness ranges differ, but zones 4–9 are supported by Morton Arboretum.
## Habit and Seasonal Interest
This cultivar is denser and smaller than the species, though its eventual spread varies among sources and with growing conditions. It may form low colonies by suckering or rhizomes. Yellow fall foliage and persistent dry seed capsules add seasonal interest.
## Maintenance
Little pruning is needed. Because it flowers on new wood, prune in late winter or spring if controlling size or removing old stems. Keep soil evenly moist during establishment and summer heat; mulch to conserve moisture.
