About Coconut Palm

Coconut Palm is a solitary, tropical palm with a smooth, ringed trunk and a crown of long, arching feather-shaped leaves. In warm coastal climates it can reach about 30 m, and its large fibrous fruits are valued for their water, edible flesh, oil, and coir. ## Form and siting The [Kew Plants of the World Online treatment](https://powo.science.kew.org/taxon/urn:lsid:ipni.org:names:666160-1/general-information) describes a robust palm reaching 30 m with leaves up to 6 m long. [NParks](https://www.nparks.gov.sg/florafaunaweb/flora/5/6/5618) likewise reports up to 30 m and a crown spread up to 6 m, with full sun, sandy medium, and moderate moisture. [UF/IFAS](https://gardeningsolutions.ifas.ufl.edu/plants/trees-and-shrubs/palms-and-cycads/coconut-palm/) recommends outdoor planting only in USDA zones 10B–11 and notes that height and form vary among cultivars. ## Uses and seasonal interest Coconuts form through the year in suitable tropical conditions. The fruit supplies drink and food; the husk, shell, leaves, and trunk also have traditional household uses. Coastal exposure and a warm, frost-free climate suit this palm best. ## Maintenance Plant in full sun in sandy, freely draining soil. Water newly planted palms regularly, then maintain moisture through dry periods without leaving the root zone waterlogged. Apply palm-specific fertilizer several times a year where soil nutrients are limiting, and remove only dead fronds. Keep fallen fruit out of waterways and clear unwanted fruit from paths.
