Autumn crocus

Autumn crocus is a corm-forming perennial whose bare flower stems appear in fall, months after its broad leaves emerge in spring. The flowers resemble crocuses, but Colchicum is a different plant and is highly poisonous if eaten. ## Seasonal growth and placement The [North Carolina Extension profile](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/colchicum-autumnale/common-name/meadow-saffron/) describes pink, purple, or white flowers in autumn and a mature size around 6–8 inches high and wide. Spring leaves later yellow and die back as the corm becomes dormant. The species profile also describes the spring leaves before their summer dormancy, followed by autumn flowers. Plant corms in organically rich, well-drained soil in sun or partial shade, allowing enough room for the foliage to mature before it disappears. ## Garden use and safety Clusters can brighten a low meadow, rock garden, woodland edge, or gap among perennials as other plants fade. Because leaves die back in summer, place them where the declining foliage can remain undisturbed. Keep it away from children and pets. ## Maintenance Plant dormant corms in late summer and water the planting area as needed while they establish. Let spring foliage yellow naturally before removing it. Divide crowded corms during summer dormancy and replant promptly.
