Create design onlineAbout Alabama Sunset Coleus
‘Alabama Sunset’ is a coleus selected for brick-red leaves edged with a narrow yellow margin. Clemson Extension lists this named cultivar among its sun-tolerant selections, making it useful where foliage color is wanted in brighter garden locations. [Clemson Extension](https://hgic.clemson.edu/factsheet/coleus/) provides the cultivar-specific color and light information; [NC State Extension](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/coleus-scutellarioides/) describes the species and its family.
## Foliage and placement
The red and yellow leaves bring strong contrast to mixed beds, borders, and large containers. Use the plant as a foliage accent, pairing it with quieter green plants or repeating its warm colors elsewhere in the planting. Although this cultivar tolerates sun, monitor it during hot, dry weather and provide afternoon shade if leaves wilt or scorch.
## Growing conditions
Coleus grows best in fertile, well-drained soil with consistent moisture during active growth. Water at the soil surface when practical, and avoid letting a container dry completely. Like other coleus, it is frost-sensitive and is usually grown as a warm-season annual in cold-winter regions.
## Maintenance
Pinch young stems to encourage branching and a fuller outline. Remove flower spikes when the goal is to keep the display focused on foliage, and protect the plant from frost.
