About Redhead Coleus

Redhead is the trade name for the coleus selection denominated UF0646. The upright, bushy plant has red to brown-purple leaves and was selected for stable foliage color in sun and shade. ## Foliage and size The [Canadian Food Inspection Agency record](https://active.inspection.gc.ca/english/plaveg/pbrpov/cropreport/cole/app00007600e.shtml) identifies UF0646 as Redhead and describes its upright, bushy habit and brown-purple leaf surfaces. Ball’s landscape guide places Redhead in an 18–36 inch height and 16–28 inch spread range, broader than the compact size in a small-pot trial. These published ranges accommodate differences between production and landscape conditions. ## Placement Use Redhead as a foliage accent in sun or shade, where its saturated red tones contrast with greens and lighter foliage. Coleus can be grown in containers or beds; the [Ball landscape guide](https://www.balllandscape.com/Thrive2018/Get-To-Know-Coleus/) describes Redhead among its sun-and-shade selections. ## Maintenance Coleus is frost-tender and is usually treated as a warm-season bedding plant in colder regions. NC State lists the species for USDA zones 10a–11b and describes it as low maintenance; protect or move container plants before cold weather.
