Create design onlineAbout Sun Splash Burgundy Coleus
Sun Splash Burgundy is a foliage coleus that brings a burgundy-toned accent to warm-season containers and garden beds. Coleus cultivars differ in size and sun response, so choose exposure with the selection’s light tolerance in mind and watch leaves as conditions change.
## Site and Use
Coleus is valued for its brightly colored foliage and works well as a summer bedding plant or container accent. Most types grow best in part shade or dappled light; some newer selections tolerate full sun, but foliage can bleach or discolor when a shade-preferring plant is exposed to intense sun. Give this plant well-drained soil in a bed or pot, and use it where its leaves can be seen at close range. [Clemson Cooperative Extension](https://hgic.clemson.edu/factsheet/coleus/)
## Water and Growth
Water thoroughly when planting and keep the root ball moist, not soggy, during establishment. After the first week or so, check below the soil surface and water when the top inch is dry. Containers dry faster than garden beds and may need more frequent checks. Avoid persistently wet soil and wetting the foliage, which can encourage root and leaf disease. Coleus usually reaches its summer size quickly and is grown mainly for its leaves rather than its small flowers.
## Maintenance
Pinch young shoots to encourage branching and a fuller outline. Flower spikes often appear late in summer; pinch or shear them if you want to keep the display focused on foliage. Coleus is tender to frost, so in cold-winter areas use it as a warm-season annual or protect a plant before frost.
