About Illustris - Colocasia

Colocasia esculenta ‘Illustris’ is grown for large green leaves patterned with dark purple to black areas and bright green veins. It is a tuberous perennial with a bold foliage display for containers, gardens, or sheltered indoor growing. ## Cultivar and size The [RHS profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/115078/colocasia-esculenta-illustris/details) lists a maximum height of 1–1.5 m and spread of 0.5–1 m for the exact cultivar. These translate to about 3.3–4.9 feet high and 1.6–3.3 feet wide. Singapore’s [National Parks Board profile](https://www.nparks.gov.sg/florafaunaweb/flora/3/6/3677) reports that ‘Illustris’ may grow to about 1.2 m, showing a similar but somewhat shorter upper height under its local conditions. ## Siting Grow in full sun or partial shade in moist but well-drained loam or sandy soil. The RHS describes it as frost tender and suited to conservatory or greenhouse growing; NParks lists container, indoor, and waterside garden uses. Its large leaves are held on upright stalks. ## Maintenance Keep the soil moist while allowing surplus water to drain. In areas with frost, use a container that can be sheltered in a conservatory or greenhouse. Handle the plant carefully because its sap can irritate.
