About Little Rebel® Dogwood

Little Rebel® is Cornus alba ‘Jefreb’, a dwarf, compact dogwood with green summer foliage that turns maroon-red in fall. Its smooth stems show a reddish cast in summer and become vivid red in winter. The cultivar was introduced by Jeffries Nurseries and is described at about 3–4 ft. tall and wide. ([Antheia Gardens](https://www.antheiagardens.ca/plant-name/Cornus-alba-Jefreb); [Purdue Arboretum Explorer](https://www.arboretum.purdue.edu/explorer/plants/21905/)) ## Landscape Use Its rounded form suits a small border, grouped planting, or low hedge. The winter stems are most effective where they remain visible after nearby perennials die back. ## Growing Conditions Grow in full sun to part shade with moist to average, well-drained soil. Antheia Gardens lists hardiness to zone 2 and a mature size of 100–125 cm tall and wide; the current lower zone floor is retained. ([Antheia Gardens](https://www.antheiagardens.ca/plant-name/Cornus-alba-Jefreb)) ## Maintenance Prune in late winter or early spring to maintain the compact shape and encourage fresh red stems. Removing about one-third of the oldest stems annually is one nursery’s suggested routine; adjust pruning to the desired size and stem display.
