About Purple Stemmed Dogwood

Cornus alba 'Kesselringii' is an upright, suckering deciduous shrub grown for its unusually dark stems. New growth is tinged red, the summer leaves turn green, and autumn foliage deepens to red-orange as the stems darken toward brown-purple in winter. The [RHS profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/96756/cornus-alba-kesselringii/details) reports a mature height and spread of 1.5–2.5 m and recommends full sun or partial shade. ## Seasonal character Small cream flowers appear in spring and are followed by white berries. The dark winter stems stand out against snow or pale foliage, while the red-toned spring and autumn leaves extend its interest beyond the dormant season. Its upright growth works in a shrub border, informal screen, or mixed hedge. ## Site and use The RHS lists clay, loam, and sandy soils, with moist but well-drained or well-drained conditions. Give the shrub room to sucker and maintain airflow; in hot, dry settings, partial shade can reduce stress. Its multi-season foliage and stems make it useful where a hedge or cut stems can be enjoyed close by. ## Maintenance Allow a young plant to establish before pruning. For fresh, colorful stems, dogwoods can be pruned in late winter or early spring; the [RHS pruning guide](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/types/shrubs/colourful-stems-large-foliage) explains the timing and stooling approach. Remove suckers when a narrower outline is preferred.
