About Prairie Fire Dogwood

'Prairie Fire' is a deciduous Tatarian dogwood selected for golden foliage and colorful stems. Leaves emerge bright yellow, soften toward yellow-green in summer, and turn red in autumn; orange-red young stems provide winter color. The [Coaldale Nurseries profile](https://www.coaldalenurseries.ca/?page_id=616&singleproduct=1301) lists a mature height of 6–7 feet and width of 5–6 feet ## Seasonal character Small white flower clusters appear in late spring or early summer, followed by ornamental white berries that attract birds. The bright foliage and winter stems make the shrub effective as a specimen or in a group where it can be seen through the seasons. Coaldale lists Zone 3 and full to partial sun. ## Site and use Give the plant space to form a rounded shrub and use it in a border, informal hedge, or group planting. The [Bron & Sons nursery profile](https://www.bronandsons.com/products/line/all/prairie-fire-dogwood-04101) gives a broader 1.5–2 m height and 1.5 m spread estimate, so mature size can vary with site and growing conditions. Moist, well-drained soil supports steady growth. ## Maintenance In late winter or early spring, remove some of the oldest stems to encourage fresh growth and maintain a dense outline. Coaldale recommends removing about one-third of the oldest stems annually. Remove root suckers if the shrub begins spreading beyond its allotted area.
