About Baileyi Red Twig Dogwood

Baileyi is a recognized selection of Cornus sericea, also called Cornus sericea forma baileyi in botanical references. It forms a multi-stemmed, suckering shrub with white flowers, pale bluish-white fruit, colorful fall leaves, and bright red stems in winter. The Royal Horticultural Society lists mature height and spread from 2.5 to 4 metres, while a North American nursery listing gives a narrower 6.5–8-foot range; actual size varies with site and pruning; [RHS](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/183523/cornus-sericea-baileyi/details) and [Bron and Sons Nursery](https://www.bronandsons.com/products/line/flowering-shrubs-roses/bailey-red-twig-dogwood-04121) identify the same selection. ## Landscape Use Plant it as a winter-interest specimen or informal hedge where its suckering habit has room. Flowers feed pollinators, and the fruit attracts birds; its red canes stand out after leaf fall. ## Growing Conditions Grow in full sun or partial shade. The RHS lists clay, loam, or sandy soil and moist but well-drained to well-drained conditions. Water regularly while young, then adjust to rainfall and soil drainage. ## Maintenance Renew the winter stem color by removing older canes in late winter or early spring. Pruning can also keep the shrub within its allotted space; allow it to spread if a natural thicket is desired.
