Isanti red twig dogwood is a fast-growing, compact redosier dogwood with a rounded, spreading form. Its green leaves turn reddish purple in autumn, and young stems provide bright red winter color. White flower clusters appear in late spring, followed by pale fruit that can attract birds.
## Form and seasonal color
The [University of Minnesota UFOR Nursery](https://trees.umn.edu/nursery-tour/species/dois) identifies the exact cultivar as 4–5 feet tall and 4–7 feet wide, with dark green leaves that turn reddish purple and red winter stems. It describes a multi-stemmed, stoloniferous shrub and notes late-spring flowers and pale fruit favored by birds. The [University of Illinois Extension](https://web.extension.illinois.edu/shrubselector/detail_plant.cfm?PlantID=373) also notes bright red winter stems and a 5–6-foot cultivar height.
## Siting
Plant in full sun to part shade. Minnesota’s profile recommends organically rich, medium to wet soil and notes tolerance of swampy conditions. The cultivar can spread by stolons, making it useful in naturalistic plantings, borders, and wet locations where its roots help hold soil.
## Maintenance
For stronger winter stem color, remove some of the oldest stems near the ground in early spring, or renew the whole shrub periodically. Spade-prune and promptly remove root suckers when a smaller footprint is needed. Allow space for its natural spreading habit when using it as a screen or thicket.
