About Kelseyi Red Twig Dogwood

Kelseyi red twig dogwood is a compact, low-growing redosier dogwood with dense green foliage that turns reddish purple in autumn. Its slender young twigs add red and orange tones through winter, while older branches are more muted. It is useful at the front of a shrub border or where a smaller dogwood is needed. ## Size and seasonal color [Oregon State University](https://landscapeplants.oregonstate.edu/plants/cornus-sericea-kelseyi) describes the exact cultivar as a deciduous shrub about 2–2.5 feet tall, with green summer leaves, purple-red fall color, and bright red young winter twigs. The [Royal Horticultural Society](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/210963/cornus-sericea-kelseys-dwarf/details) gives a broader approximate mature range of 0.5–1 m in both height and spread and notes that flowers and fruit are seldom produced. The [University of Illinois Extension](https://web.extension.illinois.edu/shrubselector/detail_plant.cfm?PlantID=373) lists the cultivar at 2–3 feet tall. ## Siting Grow in sun or partial shade in moist but well-drained soil. The RHS lists chalk, clay, loam, and sand, while Oregon State notes susceptibility to leaf spot, especially in autumn. The compact, rounded habit suits small borders and patio gardens; leave room for modest suckering. ## Maintenance Prune older stems when needed to encourage younger twigs with stronger winter color. Remove suckers if they extend beyond the desired planting area, and monitor foliage for leaf spot late in the season.
