Red Dragon Red Leafed Filbert

Red Dragon is an ornamental European hazelnut cultivar selected for contorted branches and red foliage. Oregon State University released it for landscape value rather than nut production, and describes an upright, spreading growth habit with good color retention. ## Landscape character The twisted framework gives this shrub a strong winter silhouette, while its leaves add burgundy-red color through the growing season. The OSU release identifies the cultivar as ‘Red Dragon’ (tested as OSU 897.078) and reported complete resistance to eastern filbert blight at release. Later OSU Extension reporting notes that aggressive strains have infected some cultivars previously considered resistant, so gardeners in affected regions should follow current disease guidance rather than assume lasting immunity. Remove basal shoots selectively when they interfere with the intended form, and water during establishment. Avoid crowding the plant against paths or structures so its branching remains visible.
