Tonda di Giffoni is an Italian European hazelnut cultivar grown for its round, flavorful nuts and good kernel blanching. Oregon State University includes it in its cultivar compatibility guide, and hazelnut growers continue to offer it for orchard plantings.
## Pollination and disease
OSU Extension lists ‘Tonda di Giffoni’ among hazelnut varieties and gives its incompatibility alleles and compatible pollen crosses. It rates the cultivar as having some resistance to eastern filbert blight, which is distinct from the Gasaway-gene resistance group; do not treat it as immune. Burnt Ridge Nursery describes the nuts as medium-sized and round, recommends a midseason pollinizer, and lists full sun, balanced moisture, mildly acidic soil, and good drainage. The listing places it in USDA zones 5–8 and gives a mature size up to 16 feet by 16 feet, while actual size varies with site and training. ## Maintenance
Plant with a compatible midseason pollen source and verify local bloom overlap before expecting a crop. Hazelnuts may be trained as a single-stem standard or allowed to grow as a multi-stemmed, suckering shrub. Harvest promptly at maturity where squirrels and jays are common, and scout for eastern filbert blight and bud mite.
