Corypha utan is a large, single-stemmed fan palm native from Assam to northern Australia. The Australian Native Plants Society reports that it may reach 20 metres tall with a spread up to 8 metres, and describes it as slow-growing and suited to tropical climates or warm temperate sites.
## Landscape Use
Use this palm only where its eventual size and life cycle fit the site. Its broad gray-green palmate leaves crown a single trunk; after many years it produces a large terminal flower cluster, sets seed, and dies. [The Australian Native Plants Society profile](https://anpsa.org.au/plant_profiles/corypha-utan/) gives the mature size, growth, and cultivation notes. [Kew’s Corypha utan record](https://powo.science.kew.org/taxon/urn%3Alsid%3Aipni.org%3Anames%3A666349-1/general-information) confirms the species, Arecaceae family, and native range. Treat these mature-size figures as upper limits and allow extra room for the broad crown.
## Growing Conditions
The ANPSA profile recommends full sun in tropical or warm temperate climates and notes that the plant requires plenty of water to succeed. Protect it from cold conditions and provide space for the palm’s broad crown and inflorescence.
## Maintenance
Water consistently while the palm establishes, then adjust to local rainfall and soil. Avoid crowding the trunk or terminal flowering structure. Expect the plant to die after flowering and seed maturation as part of its natural monocarpic life cycle.
