Velouette is an upright, half-hardy annual cosmos with finely divided green foliage and yellow-centered flowers in deep red and white, including striped and edged forms. Its summer-to-autumn display suits sunny annual borders, cutting beds, and informal containers.
## Garden placement
RHS describes plants reaching about 90 cm, with a broader mature height and spread range of 0.5–1 m. Leave room for an airy, upright plant and use it among lower annuals or toward the middle of a border. Its varied red-and-white flowers pair readily with solid-color summer blooms.
## Growing conditions
Choose full sun and moist but well-drained soil. The RHS lists chalk, clay, loam, and sandy soils as suitable; do not let the planting remain soggy. As a half-hardy annual, it is suited to seasonal planting in warm weather.
## Maintenance
Deadhead faded flowers to prolong the flowering season. Remove damaged growth and water during extended dry weather, while maintaining good drainage.
