About Smoketree

Smoketree (Cotinus) is a genus of deciduous shrubs and small trees grown for colorful foliage and soft, smoke-like summer flower clusters. Depending on the species or cultivar, leaves may be purple, gold, green, or acid-green and often turn red or orange before dropping in autumn. [The Royal Horticultural Society’s Cotinus guide](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/cotinus) describes the genus’s seasonal display and growing conditions. ## Garden Use Cotinus can create a dramatic specimen, add foliage color to a shrub border, or provide a backdrop for mixed plantings. Mature size and exact leaf and flower colors vary considerably among species and named selections, so check selection-specific details when choosing a planting location. ## Growing Conditions The RHS recommends fertile, well-draining soil in sun or light shade; purple-leaved selections color best in full sun. Very dry or waterlogged soil and deep shade can reduce performance and color. ## Maintenance Pruning is optional and should suit the plant and desired display. Cutting stems back hard in late winter or early spring can keep a plant more compact and encourage larger leaves, but it changes the natural flowering and shrub form described in general Cotinus guidance.
