Velveteeny™ Dwarf Purple Smoke Bush

Velveteeny™ is the trade name for Cotinus coggygria ‘Cotsidh5’, a compact deciduous smoke bush selected for purple foliage and a rounded form. The cultivar name is confirmed by both the U.S. plant patent and the Canadian variety record, while the breeder nursery lists a mature size of about 4 ft by 4 ft. [The patent text](https://patents.justia.com/patent/PP30328), [CFIA’s Cotsidh5 record](https://active.inspection.gc.ca/english/plaveg/pbrpov/cropreport/smok/app00010633e.shtml), and [Sidhu & Sons’ nursery profile](https://www.briggsnursery.com/plant/cotinus-coggygria-usppaf-cpbraf-velveteeny/) support its identity and garden traits. ## Garden Use Its small, bushy rounded habit suits patios, containers, and space-limited borders. Rich purple leaves are the main feature; mauve, airy inflorescences can appear in late spring into summer. The nursery places it in USDA Zone 4 and describes it as less than half the size of ‘Royal Purple’. ## Growing Conditions Give Velveteeny™ full sun. The breeder reports relative drought tolerance after establishment; that does not remove the need to water a newly planted shrub while it roots in. ## Maintenance Keep pruning selective and shape-focused. The patent describes a slow-growing, compact selection; no special annual cutback is required by the cited sources.
