About Royal Purple Purple Smoke Tree/Bush

Royal Purple is a purple-leaved Cotinus coggygria selection, also sold as Royal Purple smokebush. The RHS describes a bushy shrub with pink, feathery summer plumes and a mature size of 4–8 m tall and wide; a Colorado nursery lists 8–10 ft for both dimensions. The shrub suits a sunny or lightly shaded border or specimen position where the summer plumes and mature form have room to develop. ## Growing conditions The RHS recommends full sun or partial shade in moist, well-drained soil. Pine Lane lists full sun and USDA zone 4. Cotinus can grow into a large shrub, so leave room for its mature spread. ## Maintenance Pruning is optional. The RHS Cotinus guide notes that hard pruning in late winter or early spring can favor larger foliage; prune selectively after flowering when preserving the summer plume display is the priority.
