About Cranberry Cotoneaster

Cranberry cotoneaster is a compact deciduous shrub with a low, gently mounded outline and stiff, spreading branches. Small lustrous leaves frame spring flowers and bright red berries that color the late-season display, while the foliage turns reddish to purple in fall. ## Landscape role Use its spreading form as a low shrub or broad groundcover at the front of a border, on a bank, or where its autumn fruit and foliage can be seen. [University of Illinois Extension](https://web.extension.illinois.edu/hortanswers/plantdetail.cfm?PlantID=380&PlantTypeID=8) gives a mature size of 2–3 ft tall by 3–5 ft wide; the [RHS profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/4577/cotoneaster-apiculatus/details) describes it as 45–60 cm tall. Allow room for lateral growth instead of crowding it into a narrow slot. ## Siting & care Plant in full sun and well-drained soil. Illinois Extension notes that it prefers moist soil but tolerates dry conditions and alkaline soil; avoid waterlogged ground. A light cleanup can remove leaves and debris caught among the stiff low branches. ## Maintenance Water while establishing, then adjust to rainfall and soil drainage. Prune selectively to control the outline, and remove accumulated litter when it traps around the branches. Keep the red fruit for seasonal display.
