Cotoneaster

Cotoneaster is a diverse genus of evergreen and deciduous shrubs, with forms ranging from low groundcovers to large shrubs and small trees. Across the group, late-spring and early-summer flowers are followed by berries, and habit and mature size depend strongly on the species or cultivar. Depending on the selection, cotoneasters can work as border shrubs, hedges, groundcovers, wall shrubs, or small trees. Most flower and fruit more freely in full sun, although many tolerate some shade. The RHS advises avoiding very wet soils; some forms tolerate dry conditions once established. ## Maintenance Water new plantings thoroughly and during dry spells while they establish. Once settled, many need little extra irrigation except in prolonged dry weather. Prune only as needed for the selected form, since excessive clipping can reduce flowers and berries. Berries can be harmful to people and pets if eaten in quantity, so site fruiting plants thoughtfully.
