Fairy tongue crassula is a small cushion-forming succulent grown for narrow fleshy leaves and deep pink to rosy flowers. [Kew](https://powo.science.kew.org/taxon/urn:lsid:ipni.org:names:70027746-1) accepts Crassula exilis subsp. schmidtii, retaining the identity historically called Crassula schmidtii. Its placement has varied: a [New Zealand Botanical Society account](https://www.nzbotanicalsociety.org.nz/newsletter/NZBotSoc-2011-106.pdf) discusses its uncertain cultivated origin and similarity to other C. exilis forms. It should not be represented as a well-established wild provenance.
[SANBI’s cultivation advice for C. exilis](https://pza.sanbi.org/crassula-exilis) recommends gritty, draining growing medium and light shade to sun, with more growth under suitable moisture. Cuttings root readily. That is species-level growing guidance, rather than evidence that all subspecies have identical flowers or stature. Grow in a small container or rockery and renew declining cushions as needed.
The [San Luis Obispo County January 2014 plant list](https://www.slocounty.ca.gov/departments/planning-building/forms-documents/environmental-forms-and-documents/plants-information/county-approved-plant-list) explicitly names Crassula schmidtii in its Crassula notes and assigns F2. This source category identifies its most fire-retardant plants for the 30–70-foot band from a structure. It is not a guarantee against burning. The county conditions the rating on suitable soil moisture, avoiding crowding, removing dead material, separated planting groups and preventing ground-to-canopy fuel connections. The rating belongs to the named identity, without extending it to other species or cultivars.
