About Thornless Cockspur Hawthorn

Thornless cockspur hawthorn is a deciduous small tree with a broad, rounded crown and smooth, thornless stems. Spring brings creamy white flowers; red fruits follow and can remain into winter, while the glossy green leaves turn purplish in fall. [The Morton Arboretum](https://mortonarb.org/plant-and-protect/trees-and-plants/thornless-cockspur-hawthorn/) describes mature plants at about 20–30 feet tall and 20–35 feet wide, in USDA zones 3–7. ## Growing Conditions Plant in full sun and moist, well-drained soil. The species tolerates drought and a range of urban soils, including clay, alkaline and dry sites. Allow room for a broad crown and avoid placing the tree where its mature spread will conflict with paths or structures. ## Garden Use Its thornless stems and persistent fruit make this form useful near residential spaces and in mixed plantings. The flowers provide a spring display, and the fruit and branching structure add interest after leaf fall. ## Maintenance Water during establishment, then adjust to local rainfall and soil drainage. Prune selectively to maintain clearance and a balanced crown; remove damaged or crossing branches as needed.
