Carrier Hawthorn

Carriere Hawthorn is the named Carrierei selection associated with the hybrid Crataegus × lavallei. Oregon State notes that 'Carrierei' may be one of two clones of the hybrid, and the USDA Germplasm Resources Information Network records Crataegus carrierei as a synonym of Crataegus × lavallei 'Carrierei'. Oregon State describes the hybrid as upright and densely branched, with stout thorns and persistent fruit; its account says the Carrierei clone may have greenish young twigs and larger fruit, though that identification is tentative. The botanical garden profile reports white-pink flowers and strong thorns. Published height estimates differ, so preserve the approximate dimensions as a planning guide rather than a strict maximum. ## Maintenance Choose full sun to partial shade and soil that drains freely; avoid standing water. Once established, the hybrid tolerates dry periods, and the Carrierei profile also describes heat and drought tolerance. Allow room around the thorny branches and avoid tight pedestrian routes. Retain the Carrierei cultivar distinction in labels and propagation records; the broader Lavallée hybrid and the named Carrierei selection are related but should not be collapsed into one cultivar identity.
