About Washington Lustre® Hawthorn

Washington Lustre® is the rounded, upright cultivar ‘Westwood I’ of Washington hawthorn, valued for vigorous growth and a less thorny habit than the species. Plan for a mature spread as broad as its height, and allow space for its remaining thorns. ## Form and siting A municipal tree list describes ‘Westwood I’ (Washington Lustre®) as a vigorous, rounded, upright tree about 20–25 feet tall and wide, with fewer thorns than the species. “Fewer” does not mean thornless, so keep it clear of narrow paths and places where people brush against branches. The parent species has white spring flowers, red fruit, and a useful tolerance of urban conditions; its late-season fruit can add color after flowering. Full sun supports flowering and fruiting, while partial shade is also tolerated. The mature size makes it a better fit for a lawn, park, or broad planting strip than a confined courtyard. The cultivar name is retained as ‘Westwood I’; Washington Lustre® is its trade name. See the [Belleville tree list](https://www.bellevillewi.gov/media/8031) for the exact cultivar dimensions and habit, and [NC State Extension](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/crataegus-phaenopyrum/) for the Washington hawthorn species profile. ## Maintenance Give the tree room to develop its natural rounded crown. When pruning is needed, remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches and work carefully around thorns. Check local conditions before planting near pavement or utilities, since the full crown can occupy a wide area.
