About Cryptomeria 'Globosa Nana' Shrub

‘Globosa Nana’ is a compact, rounded Japanese cedar selection with dense evergreen needles and a naturally tidy dome. Its mature size varies among references and with age, but it remains a useful small-scale conifer for gardens and containers. ## Form and foliage North Carolina Extension describes this old cultivar as a dwarf dome with bluish-green needles that turn rusty red in winter. It lists a mature height of 2–4 feet and width of 3–4 feet. Cornell’s cultivar notes give a larger 5–6-foot height and 4–6-foot spread, while a nursery listing describes 4–5 feet in both directions. These references show how mature size can vary with age and growing conditions. The selection grows best in sun to partial shade and moist, well-drained soil. Its rounded form generally needs little pruning. Use it as a specimen, in a small group, along a border, or in a container where the winter foliage color can be seen. Consult [NC State Extension](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/cryptomeria-japonica-globosa-nana/common-name/dwarf-japanese-cedar/), [Cornell’s woody plants database](https://woodyplants.cals.cornell.edu/plant/print/79), and the [American Conifer Society](https://conifersociety.org/conifers/cryptomeria-japonica-globosa-nana/) for cultivar and growth information. ## Maintenance Water during establishment and through extended dry periods. Avoid heavy pruning; remove only damaged or wayward growth when necessary.
