Cryptomeria japonica, commonly called Japanese cedar or sugi, is a large evergreen conifer with a pyramidal outline and reddish-brown bark. Oregon State University reports mature dimensions around 50–60 feet high and notes that the foliage may be green or blue-green in summer and bronzy in winter; Clemson Extension lists typical tree forms reaching 50–80 feet. The species can also tolerate partial shade, though its form is generally denser in sun. Its evergreen structure suits a large specimen planting or screening where mature width and height can be accommodated. The species is native to Japan and southern China and is listed for USDA zones 5–9 by Clemson Extension. ## Maintenance Water during prolonged dry weather, especially while establishing, and avoid waterlogged soil. Allow adequate airflow around the canopy and shelter young trees from strong winds. Prune only to remove damaged growth or to correct a specific structural issue.
