About Butterbaby Squash

Butterbaby is a mini butternut winter squash with a spreading, restricted vine and personal-sized fruit. It grows best in full sun and can be trained onto a trellis when garden space is limited. [PanAmerican Seed](https://www.panamseed.com/Products/058800001039237/squash-butterbaby/) lists this variety as *Cucurbita moschata* and gives its mature size and fruit traits. ## Fruit and harvest The tan fruits are typically 4–6 inches long, with sweet orange flesh and a serving size suited to one or two people. Harvest mature fruit after roughly 100–105 days from direct sowing. PanAmerican Seed reports intermediate resistance to powdery mildew; this rating does not mean immunity. ## Growing conditions Sow outdoors after frost danger has passed, in a sunny position with fertile soil that drains well. Allow 7–10 feet for the mature vine, or guide the growth up a strong trellis and support developing fruit if needed. According to [Burpee](https://www.burpee.com/products/squash-butterbaby-prod600184), harvested fruit stores for about two to three months. ## Maintenance Water consistently while fruit is developing, keeping moisture even without waterlogging the root zone. Check vines regularly for pests and remove damaged plant material.
