Create design onlineAbout Leyland Cypress Tree
Leyland cypress is a fast-growing evergreen hybrid with dense, scale-like foliage and a tall, narrow outline. It is commonly planted as a screen or windbreak where there is room for a large tree.
## Growth and siting
Virginia Cooperative Extension describes mature trees near 80 feet tall and 20 feet wide, with a narrow conical form, and lists USDA zones 6–10. Plant in full sun and average, well-drained soil; established trees tolerate some dry periods. The current catalog dimensions and labels remain within a reasonable landscape range and are retained.
## Landscape use
Its rapid growth and dense foliage can provide privacy, but mature size makes it unsuitable for small yards or close planting beside buildings. The [Virginia Cooperative Extension profile](https://www.pubs.ext.vt.edu/content/pubs_ext_vt_edu/en/HORT/HORT-18/HORT-18.html) notes that stressed trees can develop serious disease problems, so adequate spacing and attention to drainage matter.
## Maintenance
Water during prolonged drought while plants establish, and avoid crowding that limits airflow. Hedge pruning can control width, but repeated shearing does not remove the need to plan for a tall, vigorous tree.
