About Monterey Cypress Tree

Monterey cypress is a large evergreen conifer with green, scale-like foliage and a form that broadens as the tree matures. It suits coastal or spacious landscapes where its mature canopy and exposure tolerance can be useful. ## Growth and siting The [UF/IFAS Extension profile](https://ask.ifas.ufl.edu/publication/ST224) lists a typical mature range of 40–70 feet tall and 30–40 feet wide, USDA zones 7A–10A, full sun, and growth in clay, sand, or loam when drainage is adequate. The catalog’s existing dimensions and labels fall within those ranges and are retained. Young trees are more pyramidal; older trees become broader and more irregular. ## Landscape use Monterey cypress tolerates wind and aerosol salt near the coast and can serve as a specimen or broad screen. Its eventual width is substantial, so allow space for the crown rather than relying on frequent pruning to keep it narrow. ## Maintenance Water regularly during establishment, then reduce irrigation as roots develop; the Extension profile describes moderate drought tolerance. Remove damaged or competing branches selectively and preserve the natural crown.
