Turmeric (Curcuma longa) is a warm-season, rhizomatous herb grown both for its lush tropical foliage and for the spice made from its rhizomes. It grows best in warm, humid conditions with morning sun and afternoon shade, and is useful in an herb garden or a spacious container ([NC State Extension](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/curcuma-longa/)).
## Size and Form
Plants commonly reach about 3–4 feet tall and wide, with broad, upright leaves. The underground rhizomes enlarge as the plant grows, so choose a roomy container if growing it in a pot. The rhizomes are harvested after foliage begins to yellow and dry in fall ([NC State Extension](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/curcuma-longa/)).
## Site and Seasonal Interest
Provide rich, slightly acidic soil that stays evenly moist, especially in containers. Turmeric grows through warm, humid weather and becomes dormant after its growing season; it is hardy in USDA Zones 8–11 and can be grown as an annual where winters are colder ([NC State Extension](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/curcuma-longa/)).
## Maintenance
Water regularly to keep the root zone moist without leaving the soil stagnant. In colder regions, lift the rhizomes in fall and store them in a cool, dry place for replanting after frost danger has passed. Spring or summer division is the recommended way to propagate it ([NC State Extension](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/curcuma-longa/)).
