The Lifou palm, Cyphophoenix nucele, is a solitary species found naturally only on Lifou in New Caledonia’s Loyalty Islands. It reaches about 10–15 m and has ascending to erect pinnate leaves above a ringed trunk and pale felted crownshaft ([The Palms of New Caledonia](https://horizon.documentation.ird.fr/exl-doc/pleins_textes/divers21-02/010018798.pdf); [Kew POWO](https://powo.science.kew.org/taxon/urn%3Alsid%3Aipni.org%3Anames%3A666391-1)).
## Growing Conditions
In habitat, the palm grows in mesic forest on raised coral limestone, often rooted in shallow pockets of red soil. The New Caledonian palm reference describes it as easy to cultivate, relatively fast growing, and tolerant of sun, wind, and limestone; keep the soil moist and well drained ([The Palms of New Caledonia](https://horizon.documentation.ird.fr/exl-doc/pleins_textes/divers21-02/010018798.pdf)). Its natural range is restricted to Lifou, and the IUCN Red List assesses it as Vulnerable ([IUCN Red List](https://doi.org/10.2305/IUCN.UK.2020-3.RLTS.T38502A185103182.en)).
## Landscape Use
The pale crownshaft and upright foliage make this palm a distinctive feature plant for a warm garden or large tropical landscape. Use cultivated nursery stock and provide room for the mature crown; its island habitat and conservation status make wild-collected plants a poor garden choice ([IUCN Red List](https://doi.org/10.2305/IUCN.UK.2020-3.RLTS.T38502A185103182.en); [The Palms of New Caledonia](https://horizon.documentation.ird.fr/exl-doc/pleins_textes/divers21-02/010018798.pdf)).
## Maintenance
Maintain consistent soil moisture and good drainage, with warmth and adequate light. The species tolerates sunny and windy conditions when established, but regular water supports growth in cultivation. Keep limestone tolerance in mind when choosing a site and soil mix ([The Palms of New Caledonia](https://horizon.documentation.ird.fr/exl-doc/pleins_textes/divers21-02/010018798.pdf)).
