About Spanish Gold Broom

Spanish Gold® is a named selection of *Cytisus purgans*, with a rounded mound of ascending green stems and bright golden pea-shaped flowers through much of spring. Plant Select describes it as a subalpine shrub from Spain and reports good performance across a broad range of soils and moisture conditions when drainage is adequate. [Plant Select’s Spanish Gold profile](https://plantselect.org/plant/cytisus-purgans/) provides the selection’s mature dimensions, flowering season, water guidance, and USDA zone range. ## Site and season Grow in sun or part sun and provide well-drained soil. Plant Select lists height of 3–4 ft and spread of 5–6 ft, with flowering from mid to late spring and zones 4a–9. It tolerates drought and alkaline soils; the profile also lists clay, loam, and sandy soil types, provided drainage is good. ## Maintenance In early spring, cut out brown or dead material. Plant Select notes that older plants do not resprout well, so keep pruning selective and avoid hard rejuvenation cuts. Allow the shrub’s wider spread when siting it in a dry garden or waterwise border.
