About Dahlias

Dahlias comprise many species and garden selections grown for showy flower heads in a wide range of sizes, forms, and colors. Because mature dimensions and flowering details vary by selection, use a named cultivar profile when choosing a precise fit for a bed or container. ## Site and growing conditions Plant after the soil has warmed, in full sun or light partial shade and fertile, well-drained soil with steady moisture. Mulch the bed and avoid excessive nitrogen, which can produce lanky growth. Tall varieties may need a support stake installed when planting. The [University of Florida IFAS guide](https://ask.ifas.ufl.edu/publication/FP169) recommends good drainage, consistent moisture, and removing faded flowers to extend the display. ## Flowering and storage Remove spent blooms as they fade; pinching side buds can direct more energy to fewer, larger flowers. After frost, cut back the tops and lift the tubers where winter conditions require it. Allow them to dry, then store them in a cool place in a dry packing medium. UF/IFAS notes that tubers may overwinter outdoors in USDA zones 9 and 10. ## Maintenance Check stored tubers through winter and discard any that soften or rot. Divide clumps in spring before planting.
