About Lawrence Crocker Daphne

‘Lawrence Crocker’ is a small, evergreen daphne with a dense, mounding habit, narrow dark-green leaves, and fragrant deep-pink flowers in spring, sometimes followed by sporadic summer bloom. Oregon State University describes it as a slow-growing plant about 2 ft tall and wide, and notes that the names Daphne × susannae and Daphne × medfordensis have both been used while the authenticity of the latter name is uncertain. A nursery report gives 12–17 in. as a typical height and spread in cultivation ([OSU](https://landscapeplants.oregonstate.edu/plants/daphne-lawrence-crocker); [Greenhouse Grower](https://www.greenhousegrower.com/management/grower-retailers-pick-their-favorites-from-farwest-2019/)). The selected cultivar name is retained without choosing between disputed parentage labels. Its compact size suits a rock garden, trough, or other small planting where drainage is sharp and the roots will not be disturbed. OSU reports hardiness around USDA zone 6, with zone 5 as a borderline rating. ## Maintenance Provide well-drained soil and adequate moisture while the plant establishes. Grow in sun or partial shade, and avoid prolonged saturation. Keep pruning minimal and avoid disturbing the roots; remove only damaged or misplaced growth.
