Create design onlineAbout Mexican grass tree
Mexican grass tree (Dasylirion longissimum) is an evergreen, architectural plant with a rounded crown of long, narrow, spineless green leaves. It grows slowly and brings a strong sculptural form to dry gardens, warm borders, or a large container.
## Landscape use
Place it where its mature outline has room and where the foliage can be appreciated as a focal point. Mature-size reports vary: [Monrovia](https://www.monrovia.com/mexican-grass-tree.html) lists about 4–6 feet in height and spread, while the [Southern Nevada Water Authority](https://www.snwa.com/landscapes/plants/?id=14822) describes established specimens at about 6–10 feet tall and 4–8 feet wide. The larger size may reflect older plants and local growing conditions.
## Growing conditions
Provide full sun to part shade and loose, sharply drained soil. Water during establishment; once established, it needs little supplemental water and tolerates reflected heat. USDA zones 8–11 are reported by Monrovia and the Southern Nevada Water Authority. The accepted species is native to dry regions of Mexico, as recorded by [Kew](https://powo.science.kew.org/taxon/urn:lsid:ipni.org:names:315377-2).
## Maintenance
Avoid soggy soil and reduce watering after the plant is established. Remove damaged leaves carefully, keeping hands clear of the stiff foliage.
