About Devil's Trumpet Plant

Brugmansia arborea, also listed horticulturally as *Datura arborea*, is a tropical evergreen shrub grown for large, fragrant, white trumpet flowers. It is suited to a warm conservatory or greenhouse, where its moisture and winter-temperature needs can be managed. ## Size and siting Allow room for a mature plant about eight to thirteen feet tall and five to eight feet wide. The species profile describes a bushy shrub with flowers about six inches long. The flowers hang or nod among the leaves and carry a strong fragrance. [RHS plant profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/82740/datura-arborea/details) · [Kew Plants of the World Online: *Brugmansia arborea*](https://powo.science.kew.org/taxon/urn:lsid:ipni.org:names:77109574-1) ## Culture and safety Grow it in loam-based compost or loamy, sandy soil that holds some moisture but drains freely. Provide full light indoors; during active growth, water generously and feed regularly. Keep the plant barely moist in winter and protect it from cold, with a winter minimum near five degrees Celsius. It may spend summer outdoors in light, dappled shade before returning under cover. [RHS growing guidance](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/82740/datura-arborea/details) All parts can be toxic if eaten, and sap can irritate skin and eyes. Keep it away from children and pets, and wear gloves when handling or pruning. ## Maintenance Prune only to manage shape or remove damaged growth, using protective gloves and clothing. Check for slugs, snails, mealybugs, whitefly, thrips, and spider mites when it is grown under glass.
