Create design onlineAbout Decadence® Sparkling Sapphires™ False Indigo
Decadence® ‘Sparkling Sapphires’ is a compact, upright false indigo with vivid violet-blue flowers above deep blue-green foliage. Its smaller footprint suits sunny borders and urban gardens while retaining the long-lived, substantial character typical of Baptisia.
## Landscape use
Use it near the front or middle of a perennial border, or repeat it in a naturalistic planting. The exact-cultivar [Proven Winners profile](https://www.provenwinners.com/plants/baptisia/decadence-sparkling-sapphires-false-indigo-baptisia-hybrid) describes violet-blue spring flowers and compact upright growth; [Walters Gardens](https://www.waltersgardens.com/variety.php?ID=BAPSS) confirms its cultivar identity, flower color and size.
## Size and siting
Published mature size is about 2½–3 feet high and wide. Grow in full sun to part sun with well-drained soil. The [North Carolina Extension Baptisia profile](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/baptisia/common-name/baptisia/) describes the genus as tolerant of dry or poor soil and explains that its deep taproot makes established plants difficult to transplant. The breeder lists USDA zones 4–9.
## Maintenance
Water through establishment and during extended dry spells; established plants are considered drought tolerant. Routine deadheading is optional, and ornamental pods can remain for fall interest. Select a permanent position before planting because the deep root system is difficult to move later.
