About Early Bird™ Purple Delosperma cooperi

Early Bird™ Purple is a compact ice-plant groundcover selected for early, plentiful flowers and a semi-trailing habit. The 2026–28 Danziger perennial catalog lists a height of 4–6 inches and spread of 8–10 inches, with first-year flowering and no vernalization or bulking requirement ([Danziger catalog](https://www.danzigeronline.com/files/smart-view/perennials_26-27/)). The 2024–25 ThinkPlants catalog lists the same selection and size, with full-sun exposure, late-spring-to-fall flowering, and zones 5–9 ([ThinkPlants catalog, page 29](https://online.flippingbook.com/view/530070179/29/)). Its compact scale suits the front of a sunny border, a rock garden, or a container edge where its low carpet can be seen. The breeder describes it as first to open in the morning, with good flower coverage and early blooming. The 2026–28 catalog lists zones 4–9 and spring flowering, while the earlier catalog lists zones 5–9 and a late-spring-to-fall flowering period. ## Maintenance Provide full sun and a freely draining site. Allow the plant room to spread, and avoid leaving roots in standing water. Danziger identifies this selection as heat- and drought-tolerant; water as needed during establishment and extended dry periods.
