John Proffitt is the named ice-plant cultivar sold under the Table Mountain® name. Plant Select describes a fast-spreading evergreen mat with purple flowers from early summer into fall, about 1–2 inches tall and 16–20 inches wide, for USDA zones 4–9 ([Plant Select](https://plantselect.org/plant/delosperma-john-proffitt/)). The Royal Horticultural Society gives a maximum height of 10 cm and a spread of 0.1–0.5 m, while Colorado State and Denver Botanic Gardens report roughly 2 inches high by 18 inches wide ([RHS](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/181223/delosperma-table-mountain/details); [Colorado State](https://newsmediarelations.colostate.edu/2002/04/16/colorado-state-denver-botanic-gardens-announce-plant-select-choices-for-2002/)).
These accounts agree on a very low mat that spreads much farther than it rises. The succulent leaves can remain green through winter and may take on purple tones in cold weather. Use this groundcover in a sunny, sharply drained site, gravel garden, or container where its spreading edge has room. Its cultivar identity is John Proffitt, with Table Mountain® retained as the associated trade name.
## Maintenance
Plant in full sun and well-drained, gritty soil. It tolerates dry conditions once established, but extended winter wetness can cause dieback. Avoid bark mulch around the crown; gravel is a better surface covering.
