Delphinium elatum, often called candle larkspur or bee delphinium, is an upright perennial with lobed foliage and stiff summer spikes of dark blue-purple flowers. It brings vertical color to a sunny cottage border, while its mature size varies among garden forms.
## Form and placement
The species can reach about 4.9–8.2 ft. tall and 1.6–3.3 ft. wide, so give it room toward the back of a border. Choose a sheltered position where the tall stems can be seen and have space for air circulation. The [RHS species profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/5398/delphinium-elatum/details) describes full sun, fertile well-drained soil, and wind shelter; the [Morton Arboretum](https://mortonarb.org/plant-and-protect/trees-and-plants/delphinium/) also recommends moist, well-drained ground and notes that the flowers attract butterflies and hummingbirds.
## Growing conditions
Use fertile soil that holds moisture but drains freely. Delphiniums prefer cool summers; in hotter regions, afternoon shade can help. Avoid waterlogged ground, which raises crown-rot risk, and protect the stems from strong winds and heavy rain. All parts are harmful if eaten; wear gloves while handling plants.
## Maintenance
Stake stems before they lean. Remove spent spikes after flowering, then cut old foliage to the ground once it has withered in autumn. Watch for slugs, aphids, leaf miners, powdery mildew, and crown rot. [NC State Extension's D. elatum guidance](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/delphinium-elatum/) covers summer care and common problems.
