About Cooktown Orchid

Cooktown orchid is the accepted species Dendrobium bigibbum, an evergreen tropical orchid with upright, cane-like stems and arching flower spikes. Its long-lasting, pinkish-purple blooms resemble moth orchids, and the canes carry leaves along their upper portions. [RHS](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/158381/dendrobium-bigibbum/details) · [Kew Plants of the World Online](https://powo.science.kew.org/taxon/urn:lsid:ipni.org:names:626928-1) ## Light and growing conditions Grow this tropical orchid in a bright, sheltered place with filtered or indirect light and good air movement. The RHS lists full sun or partial shade and well-drained conditions; indoors, protect leaves from harsh midday sun and provide extra humidity during active spring and summer growth. Use an orchid-appropriate, free-draining medium. ## Water and flowering Water about weekly during active growth, then let the roots dry between waterings, especially in winter. Mature canes produce arching stems from upper nodes, with multiple long-lasting flowers. A bright room and reduced watering in the cooler season help the plant rest without leaving its roots wet. ## Maintenance Keep the plant warm and sheltered from cold conditions. Divide only when a mature clump has outgrown its pot, retaining healthy canes and roots on each division.
