About Bronzeschleier Tufted Hairgrass

Bronzeschleier is a tufted ornamental grass with stiff, dark green leaves and arching flower panicles that carry light bronze spikelets in summer. It grows larger than the species and makes a fine-textured clump for a sunny or partly shaded border. The [RHS profile for Bronzeschleier](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/114430/deschampsia-cespitosa-bronzeschleier/details/) gives a mature height of 0.5–1 m and spread of 0.1–0.5 m; the [Morton Arboretum](https://mortonarb.org/plant-and-protect/trees-and-plants/tufted-hair-grass/) also describes its abundant bronze-yellow flowers. ## Site and season Plant in full sun or partial shade in moist soil that drains freely. The airy panicles rise over a narrow-leaved mound and suit naturalistic borders, rain gardens with drainage, and mixed plantings with ferns or other grasses. Tufted hair grass is a cool-season species; it can lose vigor in hot, dry sites. ## Maintenance Water through dry weather, especially while establishing, and do not let the root zone dry for long periods. Cut old foliage back before new growth starts in spring in milder areas; in colder climates, cut it down in late autumn or early spring. Leave the seed heads in place if you want their winter structure, then remove them during seasonal cleanup.
