Create design onlineAbout Goldtau Tufted Hairgrass
Goldtau is a clump-forming tufted hair grass with fine leaves and airy flower sprays that emerge chartreuse-yellow and mature to bronze. Hoffman Nursery lists a 1-foot foliage height and 2-foot height in bloom, early-summer flowering, moist soil, sun to partial shade, and USDA zones 4–9 on its [Goldtau profile](https://hoffmannursery.com/plants/details/deschampsia-cespitosa-goldtau). The seed heads remain useful in winter and can be included in cut-flower arrangements.
## In the garden
Plant Goldtau where its changing flower color can be seen against darker foliage, or use it in groups for a light, meadow-like effect. It performs and flowers best in cooler climates. In warmer areas, give it partial shade and keep the soil moist but well-drained; flower production may be reduced by heat.
## Maintenance
Keep the root zone evenly moist, especially during establishment and dry weather. The foliage is semi-evergreen in favorable conditions, and the grass responds well to seasonal cutting back. Remove old stems before spring growth begins, and leave some seed heads standing over winter if you want added texture. Avoid overwatering during cold storage or winter protection, and provide drainage so the clump does not sit in saturated soil.
