About Pixie Fountain Dwarf Tufted Hairgrass Grass

Pixie Fountain is a compact, tussock-forming tufted hair grass with semi-evergreen foliage and airy summer panicles. The [RHS cultivar profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/297976/deschampsia-cespitosa-pixie-fountain/details) gives a mature height of 0.5–1 m and spread of 0.1–0.5 m, with purple spikelets that age brown; [Emerald Coast Growers](https://ecgrowers.com/deschampsia-cespitosa-pixie-fountain-50/) lists a 24-inch mature height and USDA zones 2–7. ## In the garden Use Pixie Fountain at the front of a border, in a container, or among other fine-textured grasses where its small clump can be seen. Give it full sun or partial shade and moist but well-drained soil. Sources describe the flower heads somewhat differently: RHS notes purple spikelets aging brown, while the grower listing describes silvery-white flowers maturing to brown. ## Maintenance Water while the clump establishes and during dry spells, then allow excess water to drain away. Remove old leaves in early spring before fresh growth appears. Flower stems can be cut for fresh or dried arrangements, or left standing for seasonal texture. Avoid prolonged drought and waterlogged soil, both of which can reduce the quality of the foliage and flowering.
