About Schottland Tufted Hairgrass

Schottland is a named selection of tufted hair grass, Deschampsia cespitosa. The Morton Arboretum describes this cultivar as larger than the species, with cream-colored flowers, while the species provides fine, airy texture above a dense clump of narrow green leaves. ## Form and seasonal interest Tufted hair grass forms foliage mounds about 1–2 feet tall, with flowering stems reaching roughly 3 feet; those figures describe the species, and Schottland is reported to grow larger. Its open flower panicles appear in late spring, then carry small grains that make a light summer display. Foliage may remain partly green in mild winters and become dormant in colder conditions. ## Siting This is a cool-season grass that grows most actively in spring and fall. It prefers moist soil and partial shade and performs poorly in hot, dry sites. Give the clump room for its arching foliage and airy flower stems, and use it where the seasonal texture can be seen against a darker background. ## Maintenance Cut back old foliage in early spring before new growth starts in mild climates; in cooler climates, cut it down in late autumn or early spring. The Morton Arboretum reports no serious pest or disease problems. [Morton Arboretum: tufted hair grass and Schottland](https://mortonarb.org/plant-and-protect/trees-and-plants/tufted-hair-grass/)
